My mother-in-law shaved my head while I slept on the very night the United States Army promoted me into one of the most important commands of my career.

Ryan had posted.

Of course he had.

Not the full video. Not the truth. Just a carefully cropped photograph of my shaved head, taken from the bedroom doorway, paired with a caption about “mental breakdowns,” “career obsession,” and “what the Army does to women who abandon family.”

My stomach turned, but my face remained still.

“How far has it spread?” I asked.

“Small so far. A few dozen shares. Mostly his circle.”

“Preserve everything.”

“Already done, ma’am.”

I looked at him.

He gave the smallest shrug. “You hired competent people.”

That almost made me smile.
