My mother-in-law shaved my head while I slept on the very night the United States Army promoted me into one of the most important commands of my career.

Linda had not simply raised a controlling son.

She had built him.

Name by name. Lie by lie. Debt by debt.

General Halvorsen spoke for the first time. “Counselor, do you believe Colonel Ellison’s personal information or military access has been compromised?”

“I believe attempts have been made,” Sarah said. “I also believe her promotion triggered urgency. Someone wanted control over her financial assets before her command status complicated the plan.”

The general turned to me. “Colonel, you will move into temporary secure lodging tonight. Your command team will be briefed only on what they need to know. Your duties continue unless you request leave.”

My answer came instantly. “I do not request leave.”

A faint approval passed across his face. “Understood.”

Sarah said, “Mara, do not return home. Do not answer Ryan. Do not answer Linda. Send everything to me.”
